After Egg attempts to train Dunk's uncooperative warhorse, Thunder, Dunk teaches his new squire an important skill. Ser Robyn Rhysling confronts Egg and questions whether the horse was stolen. Egg asks to squire for Dunk permanently, but Plummer interrupts them and privately asks Dunk to ride in a rigged joust against Ser Androw Ashford to recoup the money spent on hosting the costly tournament, a proposal that baffles Dunk. As they take in the tourney's first full day of events, Aerion acts dishonorably in a jousting match and mortally wounds Ser Humfrey Hardyng's horse, enraging the crowd.
A fortune teller predicts that Dunk will know great success, and that Egg will become king and die in flames. Egg watches Tanselle perform a show of a dragon being slain. Feeling his family was insulted, Aerion breaks Tanselle's finger; Egg fetches Dunk, who attacks the prince in fury. Guards restrain Dunk, and as Aerion prepares to take revenge, Egg orders them to stop, revealing that he and Aerion are brothers.
