Wights attack them in the forest, but a man on horseback saves them, later revealed to be Benjen Stark, who says the White Walkers turned him but the Children of the Forest reversed it with dragonglass. At Horn Hill, Gilly meets Sam's family: his father, Randyll, demeans him as a soft bookworm and insults Gilly for being a Wildling, and that night Sam takes House Tarly's ancestral Valyrian steel sword, Heartsbane, and leaves with Gilly and Little Sam. Facing a difficult choice, Arya warns Lady Crane of the planned assassination, then retrieves Needle; Jaqen allows the Waif to find and kill Arya.
Jaime faces off against the High Sparrow, attempting to rescue Margaery from the Faith Militant, only to find she has repented and Tommen has forged an alliance with the Faith; Tommen forbids Jaime to serve as a Kingsguard in King's Landing and orders him to aid Walder Frey in retaking Riverrun from Brynden Tully. Daenerys mounts Drogon and inspires the Dothraki to cross the Narrow Sea and conquer Westeros for her.
